NEVER USE AN ILLEGAL OPERATOR. All lorries (over 3.5 tonnes) that are legal have either a blue or green disc just above the road fund licence disc. Check with www.vosa.gov.uk to see is your transport is legal. Don't risk having your horse impounded with the illegal lorry. Illegal operators are ALWAYS cheap as they do not have the required insurance or licences! Due to current HEALTH & SAFETY rules you should provide your horse with a headcollar for the transport (see Horse & Hound, December 2004). On veterinary advice you should also provide your horse with its own travel gear. JMRT cannot provide rugs/bandages due to cross contamination. JMRT can purchase VETRAP and Gamgee for you (and provide the receipts) and add this cost to the transport. All horses are subject to Animal Health Act 1981-Welfare of Animals (Transport) Order 1997 (as amended). All horses by law should be accompanied by an Animal Transport Certificate. All legal Horse Transporters will be happy to show you this documentation and allow you to make a copy. The only exemptions are if you (the owner) travel with the horse on a private journey! The ATC has the name and address of the transporter, the name and address of the owner, the address of loading and the final destination, date & time of loading of the first horse on board and the date and time of arrival. Ensure you see this documentation! Horses can be travelled up to 24 hours as long as they have been watered and fed every 8 hours. After 24 hours your horse must be unloaded and rested in a stable for a minimum of 8 hours before they can be travelled again. |
